Utah Studies--Friday, December 18, 2009

Today in class students turned in the final draft of their essay! This was worth 60 points (a lot in my class). If it has not been turned in yet, there will be a zero in the grade book for that score until it is turned in. If there is just an asterisk there, that means it was turned in but I have yet to grade it. These essays take about 15 hours of total grading, so the process is slow. Also in class we began examining the impacts of the coming of the railroad on Utah's economy. DUE MONDAY: Nothing, unless the essay needs to be turned in still!

I just get failure notices when I email you, so here is Daryl's essay.

Changes brought to Utah's Native Americans by settlers.

Even though both were Utes, Wakara sought to gain power over the Timanogots. This was because of the arrival of the Mormon Settlers. My report will show that changes brought to Utah's Native Americans by settlers were generally bad. I will show this through examples of war, disease, and the institution of Native American reservations.

War, my first example, was between Native Americans and settlers. This is shown in the Bear River Massacre, where Colonel Patrick Conner lead a massacre of 250 Shoshone women, men, and children. But war was also between Native American groups, as shown in my first paragraph. Often this was because of the settlers. This was bad because it resulted in loss of population, and was partially responsible for Native American reservations.

The Native American reservations were enclosed sections of land on which the U.S. Government forced the Native Americans to stay. These reservations were only but a small fraction of their former lands. This was bad because the Native Americans had less hunting area, and because they could not migrate. The Native Americans were semi-sedentary, which means they would move seasonally to avoid bad wether conditions in winter.

My final example, disease, killed, along with war, 80-90% of Native American population. The diseases were brought to North America across the ocean by Eurapean Settlers. The most well known disease was Small Pox, which was mutated from Cow Pox. It was bad because it killed most of the Native American population.

I have shown, through examples of war, disease, and the institution of Native American reservations, that changes brought to Utah's Native Americans were generally bad.
