Utah Studies--Wednesday, September 30, 2009

Yesterday I was gone.  In class students read news articles about subjects related to Utah geology.  Today in class students continued working on their geology group presentations.  DUE MONDAY: Nothing.  DUE TUESDAY: 15 more points in learning centers (10 points for Period 3)!  By Tuesday students should have earned 35 total points in learning centers.  This includes the 20 points from Learning Center Check #1 (Sept. 16) and the upcoming points due Tuesday.  If a student is behind in learning centers and has not turned even 20 points yet, they still can get credit.  But they need to get on the move!

Utah Studies--Monday, September 28, 2009

Today in class students worked on creating their geology presentations.  Tomorrow we will have a sub, so students will be reading current events related to geology.  Students MUST be on their very best behavior!  DUE TOMORROW: Nothing, but 15  more points in learning centers (10 points for my 3rd period class) are due next Tuesday, October 6.  Students need to be working on those mostly at home.  If students did not turn in any learning centers for check #1 (see Skyward on Sep. 16) than they can still turn those points in too, but this means they're behind and need badly to catch up.

Utah Studies--Thursday, September 17, 2009

Today in class students took a Utah map quiz.  We also had our first Rise and Stretch session.  If your child went to Stretch ask them what they learned to do.  If they went to Rise ask them how they think they did in re-learning the subject.  The first time through was a little chaotic, but once the students get the hang off it then students will have more time to learn!  DUE TOMORROW: Nothing.

Utah Studies--Thursday, September 17, 2009

Today in class students took a Utah map quiz and then reflected on their academic effort and performance so far this school year.  DUE TOMORROW: Nothing, but if students have not turned in learning centers yet those are overdue (20 points for Periods 1-2, 4-6; 10 points for Period 3) so get them in as soon as possible!

Utah Studies--Friday, September 4, 2009

I forgot AGAIN to post!  So I will explain the last TWO days.

Yesterday I demonstrated how cause and effect rules our world.  Then we discussed various reasons why people should study history.

Today, we did an activity designed to show students how historians are like detectives because historians use evidence and witnesses to solve historical mysteries.  Also we discussed the difference between a primary source ("eyewitness") and a secondary source ("anyone besides the eyewitnesses").  DUE TUESDAY:  Nothing, but it's not a bad idea to study the 6 Historian Skills definitions we've learned so far since there will be a quiz on them on Wednesday.

NOTICE:

A few of you have been, I think, requesting access to my Google Document called "Q1 Learning Centers." You do not need to do that to be able to print the documents at home. I think some of you are clicking on "Share" and then choosing to request access. This is a way to group edit things on Google Docs. Since I am the author of these assignments there's no reason for you to need to request to share access, since you do not need to edit these. Just choose "File" and then "Print" to print all (or some) of the documents you need. Email me if I am misunderstanding your requests. My email is matthew.shake@fortherriman.org.

Utah Studies--Wednesday, September 2, 2009

Today in all classes we began discussing the 6 skills one needs to become a great historian.  Today we discussed the skill of listening to different perspectives.  We also examined different perspectives on what history is.  DUE TOMORROW: Nothing.

Utah Studies--Tuesday, September 1, 2009

I'm still rusty--I forgot to post for yesterday so here goes.  Yesterday we went around the school to various stations to have one more day of learning how to use the RATTLE rules around the school.

Today in class we FINALLY began studying historically related topics!  We created short biographies of ourselves since history is simply the study of humans and we are humans!  DUE TOMORROW:  For all classes (except Period 1 and 2) the biography is due at the beginning of class!
