Today in class students learned about the coming of the LDS pioneers to Utah. They also learned about how Utah was briefly a slave territory and about the causes of the so-called Utah War. DUE TOMORROW: Nothing, but remember that 10 points in learning centers (20 for Period 5) are due Friday!

Utah Studies--Monday, September 13, 2010

Today in class students read one of three different interviews with diverse Spanish-speaking Utah residents about their experiences here. Then they wrote a 1/2 page summary of the article. DUE TOMORROW: Nothing. DUE FRIDAY: Learning Center Check #1 worth 10 points (except Period 5, who has 20 points due)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These must be done as homework and can be found in my classroom and on this blog!

Utah Studies--Friday, September 10, 2010

Today in class students read an article about the effects of the Mexican-American War. Then they wrote a short 1/2 page essay about how Utah would be different if Mexico had won that war. Yesterday, I was out sick, but students read about and took notes on what happened in Utah during the Spanish/Mexican era--things like the trappers, the US government explorers, and the arrival of the LDS people in 1847. DUE MONDAY: Students essays about if Mexico had won the Mexican-American War are due at the start of class.

Today in class students learned about the first Europeans to Utah--Francisco Dominguez and Silvestre Escalante of Spain. DUE TOMORROW: Nothing.

In class on Friday, students finished taking notes about the various Native American cultures that are native to Utah. They then turned these in for a grade. DUE WEDNESDAY: Nothing.

Utah Studies--Tuesday, August 31, 2010

Today in class students learned about my Learning Centers homework program. Students must complete 10 points in homework by each due date (about 3 weeks apart) for a total of 30 points per quarter. (Except my ELP students, who need to earn 50 points per quarter.) Students can choose from a list of different homework options in order to earn their points. After discussing Learning Centers, students then listened to a retelling of the Navajo creation story, as an introduction to our Utah Native American unit. DUE TOMORROW: Nothing.
