Utah Studies--Friday, January 16, 2008

Yesterday all students had a substitute teacher.  Students in Period 1, 3-7 read about Utah's government.  Students in Period 2 read about migrating in handcarts and reviewed for the quiz today.

Today in Periods 1, 3-7 students closely examined historical bias and differing opinions regarding what was once called the Battle of Bear River and is now termed, by most historians, as the Bear River Massacre.  DUE NEXT WEDNESDAY: Nothing, have a great 4 day weekend!

Today in Period 2 students took a quiz on the settling of Utah and also began learning about the upcoming Native American Culture Change poster project.  DUE NEXT WEDNESDAY: Nothing, have a great 4 day weekend!

Today in all periods I explained to students how to earn a good grade for the Voting Topic I run from the library computers.  Also I previewed for them what the 3rd quarter learning centers will be.  DUE TOMORROW: Nothing, but we will have a sub so make sure to bring your best behavior.

I apologize for forgetting to post yesterday.  In all classes, students participated in the preliminary rounds of the geography bee.  Congratulations to those who survived to the school finals: Nikki Griffiths, Josh Lemieux, Ben Hopkins, Brynn Lawrence, Jake Makin, Braxton Cash, Quentin Ochoa, James Jolley, Brandie Herrera, Jordan Jarvis, Alex Perry, and Braden Hooten.

Today in Period 1 students had a chance to work on late learning centers if they needed to.  DUE TOMORROW: The final deadline for late work for quarter 2 is at 2:45 pm tomorrow!  You must get your work in by then.

Today in Period 2 students examined key moments and places along the Mormon Trail to Utah.  DUE TOMORROW: Be prepared for the short Rise and Stretch quiz on what brought the LDS people to Utah.  Also, the final deadline for late work for quarter 2 is at 2:45 pm tomorrow!  You must get your work in by then.

Today in Periods 3-7 students began to analyze how Brigham Young's aspirations for a self-sufficient economy were dramatically affected by the arrival of the train in Utah.  DUE TOMORROW: The final deadline for late work for quarter 2 is at 2:45 pm tomorrow!  You must get your work in by then.

Today in Period 1 students examined the conflicts between the federal government and Utah settlers leading up to Utah becoming a state in 1896.  DUE TOMORROW:  The final 10 points in learning centers are due by 2:45 pm!  Recall that students need 30 learning center points total.  If a student has remained on schedule then they should have already completed 20 points, thus having only 10 points left to do by tomorrow.  But if they have fallen behind, they need to turn in more.
